Drug addiction treatment can be categorized in two basic categories. The first category is known as residential drug rehabilitation treatment. This type of treatment is mainly done by professionals who specialize in drug addiction. The addict undergoes a process wherein his or her mental and physical health are assessed. This evaluation helps to determine the effectiveness of a drug addiction treatment, which is why it’s considered a form of “psychiatric evaluation” since it can be helpful in treating other mental illnesses.
The second type of drug addiction treatment is the outpatient drug treatment. In this treatment, patients do not stay in the facility that specializes in drug addiction. Instead, they take care of themselves. Patients usually have a 24-hour support system including their family and their friends. They also receive counseling, therapy and nutritional support. This form of drug treatment allows patients to get back to normal life without being constantly reminded about their addiction.
Drug rehab centers usually require patients to undergo different types of tests before being accepted. These tests are usually conducted to find out whether or not the person is suffering from a mental disorder, like schizophrenia. Also, tests are conducted to determine whether or not the patient suffers from any serious physical ailments. A complete list of the various tests that can be used can be seen at each center. If one is not sure of his or her own capabilities, one can still be admitted into the treatment center. Some programs also involve a couple of different therapies to help the patient overcome his addiction. Usually, these include cognitive behavioral therapy, medication detox, and group therapy.
