Drug addiction treatment can vary according to what type of addiction you are suffering from. The two main types of addiction are physical and mental. Physical addiction is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain that creates the drug craving or addiction. In addition, drug dependence can be a result of the psychological component of addiction, as well. This type of addiction treatment is very different from a generic addiction where the addict is just experiencing a temporary withdrawal from their drug or alcohol addiction and has not developed into a full blown dependence.

Physical drug addiction treatment comes in several forms. One type is detoxification therapy which detoxifies your body of the harmful effects of drug abuse or alcoholism. Other forms of treatment include detox or detoxification units. Detoxification units are like holding cells where an individual will experience withdrawal symptoms while being administered drugs to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Also referred to as inpatient detoxification units, this form of drug addiction treatment usually involves a lengthy stay.

Mental addiction is a little more complicated than that of physical abuse because drug addiction does not necessarily result from drug use. Drug users may experience withdrawal symptoms when they first stop using drugs. The most common form of mental addiction treatment is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is often done in a group environment so that addicts can discuss their drug problems with others who have also been through the same problems. Another form of mental drug addiction treatment involves individual counseling. A person suffering from mental abuse may choose to go through a residential treatment facility where they will have access to therapy, medication, support groups and life skills education and training to help them overcome their drug addiction. If you or someone you know is suffering from mental drug addiction, the best form of treatment would be to seek out professional treatment for your condition.
