Drug addiction is avoidable. Prevention and education efforts aimed particularly at young children and teenagers and within families, schools, communities, the media and more can be highly effective in curbing drug abuse. There are also various rehabilitation centers that can provide drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation services for those who have become dependent on drugs or have failed to overcome their addiction. But for drug dependence to be successfully treated, the addict has to be willing to seek help and undergo some kind of detoxification process. In addition to rehab, various other programs are available to combat the drug dependency; most notably, there is also residential drug treatment where the patient is given his own apartment to live in and is supervised by professional health care personnel.
The different types of treatment programs offered vary from individual-to-individual to the community-to-community. But a common denominator among such drug treatment programs is to help the patient recover from his drug addiction and achieve sobriety. Most drug treatment centers offer a variety of rehabilitation therapies, from group therapy sessions to individual counseling sessions. A typical rehab program can last from one month to up to twelve months depending on the severity of the patient’s problem. The programs also involve the participation of family members and extended family, including those who may have been affected by the addiction in some way. In addition to these, family-based rehabilitation programs are also offered to address the issue of relapse.
There are some treatment programs that include both residential and outpatient treatment. In a residential drug treatment program, the patient will be given his own room and be able to control his own life and freedom. He also gets to spend time with his family and friends, as he receives counseling from an addict recovery specialist. The residential treatment program also includes one or two group sessions per week with a number of other patients. However, this type of treatment usually costs more than the outpatient program because of the additional expenses of having a full time therapist, housekeeping, etc.
