UAB Community Psychology Program is unique among other medical centers in the United States in that it houses and runs an actual community psychiatric facility, known as Community Psychiatry Center (CPC). This facility serves people with mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and schizoaffective disorder. It also treats people who have problems with substance abuse, especially alcohol and illegal drug abuse. Because of the nature of its activities, Community Psychiatry Center is one of the leading clinics in the United States.\n\n \n\nThe goal of CPC is to provide the best possible care to all those who come to them. This is achieved through a combination of clinical services and support services offered by the staff and doctors. People who are suffering from mental disorders are able to get the best treatment through this clinic’s program. The clinic does not discriminate and accepts all patients irrespective of their age, gender, ethnicity, race, or social status. Many people are referred to CPC from mental health clinics and rehabilitation centers because they cannot afford private psychotherapy treatment.\n\n \n\nA psychiatrist assigned to Community Psychiatry Center can treat both adult and children. As far as the types of medications used to treat these patients are concerned, they are given medication in a combination. This helps them to improve their overall mental condition. Other therapies and interventions like group therapy sessions are also conducted regularly to provide effective treatment to the patients.
