The West Alabama Mental Healthcare Center is among the community mental healthcare organizations supporting the Steering Up initiative implemented by the Alabama State Department of Mental Health. This program supports the provision of medical, therapeutic, social, educational, and spiritual services for individuals with psychiatric illnesses, who are at-risk for incarceration. The primary focus of the Steering up program is to provide an opportunity for families and communities to be proactive in preventing the unnecessary incarceration of people with psychiatric disorders.\n\nThe Mental Healthcare Center has several different programs available for persons who suffer from psychiatric illnesses. The community-based outpatient treatment program offers a variety of treatment options, including psychiatric residential treatment programs, inpatient, psychopharmacological treatment programs, and outpatient mental health care programs, including family treatment and specialty treatment. Many of the residential treatment programs offer specialized care to patients with co-occurring psychiatric disorders or severe emotional and developmental issues. Family services include individual and group therapy, as well as family support and referral services.\n\nThe West Alabama Psychiatric Healthcare Center serves people of all ages and races. It offers both inpatient and outpatient treatment to treat mental disorders, including major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder, major psychotic disorder, substance abuse, and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. The center also provides psychosocial rehabilitation services.
