In West Haven, Connecticut women owned and operated drug treatment center called “halfway house” opened. This is a women-only residential treatment center for women who are suffering from addiction to drugs or alcohol. The name halfway house comes from the fact that the women who live there have to cross over from one treatment center to another in an attempt to finish their treatment for their addiction. Residents at this halfway house will enjoy the advantages of a women-only residential treatment center while at the same time enjoying the flexibility in choosing which addiction treatment center they would like to attend.
“A fine example of a women-run substance abuse rehab in Connecticut,” according to Dr. Richard F. Volk, past president of the New Haven Association of Alcoholics and Drug Addicts, and one of the authors of a book on the subject, “Albany – A Haven for Addicts,” was once asked, “What’s your secret?” He replied, “A half-mile drive from my office, I found a women-run facility. No matter what you call it, if people can get clean, they can get help. People who enter substance abuse programs in a women’s center have gone through everything-loss of job, loss of spouse, divorce, custody of children, all while trying to stay sober. But they’ve come out of it stronger and more powerful than they’ve ever been before.
In other words, they have learned to not only get clean, but to thrive and succeed as good human beings. They need an environment that provides a safe refuge to learn and grow. They need a setting and atmosphere that will encourage recovery without constant judgment from those who would rather label them as weak, stupid, addicted, or crazy. This is where the residents of “halfway house” receive a break from being condemned by others while at the same time learning that life is fragile and precious and worth fighting for.
