There are several different types of addiction treatment programs, depending on the nature of the addiction as well as the physical, mental, social, or emotional state that the addict is in. While some people experience one specific addiction, others may be addicted to multiple types of addictions including alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and others. Each type of addiction requires its own unique program of treatment.
Addiction to drugs, alcoholism, and drug dependence itself is a very serious condition, as is the addiction to smoking cigarettes and drug abuse. (Substance abuse as a physical illness–and other types of addiction) Physical and mental illnesses are also a form of substance abuse. And while there are many forms of treatment for all of these conditions, there are also several types of treatments that can be administered for a specific addiction. Drug addiction treatment centers are a good option for anyone who may be a victim of an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but they are not necessarily the best option for everyone.
Drug addiction treatment programs can be individualized to suit an individual’s needs, but they are most commonly designed around groups of addicts who are at greater risk for drug dependency. Treatment centers, however, may work with an addict for a period of time as part of an outpatient program. This period of time is usually about one year and it is used to see if the addict is truly addicted to drugs or alcohol, if he or she is truly drug dependent, and to see if treatment is working. If an addict does not receive continued treatment after the one year period, the addict can be considered an outpatient. Once the addict has completed the entire twelve-month program, he or she can be considered an inpatient and will then continue with his or her treatment at a center.
