Freedom House is an international, non-government, U.S-based, independent non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy in the fields of human rights, democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. Freedom House was established in October 1941, with FDR and Willkie serving as its first honorary board members. The International Freedom Foundation is the main international office of Freedom House and it provides support and assistance to a variety of civil society organizations, particularly those dealing with human rights, democracy and freedom in third world countries. The mission of Freedom House is to promote the universal human rights of all people worldwide. The Institute for Policy Studies is another major branch of the Freedom House in America and is dedicated to building progressive organizations and coalitions that are committed to ending poverty and promoting economic growth.\n\n \n\nThe organization is funded by voluntary contributions from the country’s civil society, governmental and non- governmental organizations, including foundations, associations, cooperatives and trade unions. Freedom House supports democracy through educational programming, civil society development, media, advocacy, and legal initiatives. It also promotes free trade, the rule of law, development of human resources, the environment and the development of democratic practices. Freedom House aims to empower people and help them exercise their fundamental freedoms and rights. It advocates for and strengthens the political leadership of the nation, and encourages self-government, economic growth, the eradication of poverty and the promotion of a healthy and peaceful society.\n\n \n\nFreedom House has been criticized for its interference in the free speech debate, particularly during its founding period. Despite this criticism, Freedom House continues to promote and work on behalf of free speech. In the early part of Freedom’s history it was accused of attempting to curtail free speech. During World War II and after, there were accusations of censorship in the United States of America. Freedom house has consistently remained committed to the principle that free speech must be balanced with the need to protect people’s security. The organisation does not actively participate in political campaigns or lobby for legislation. Freedom House has been praised by the U.N. Human Rights Committee for its advocacy work.
