Going sober is an overwhelming experience for many people. It’s hard enough to live a sober life without adding the fear of relapse to the mix. Many people turn to drugs and alcohol to feel better. The problem with this approach is that drugs and alcohol do not cure addiction. They just mask the symptoms so you can go on with your life. This is why so many people try to detox or stay sober on their own. Unfortunately this can be very dangerous and even lead to death.
Sobriety is a process not an event. You cannot expect to wake up one day and suddenly be free. A good sober living program will have you on a weekly basis participating in things that will get your mind and body in a place where it is no longer tempted to use drugs or alcohol. These activities range from yoga to meditation to group activities that are supervised by a professional counselor. As you progress through the program you will be able to take on new challenges like going out for the first time in months and miles to a date you have long promised but never made. This can be exhilarating but it also requires some serious commitment to your progress and staying on track.
One thing to look for in a program is support. There should be a person usually someone you can talk to about your feelings or problems who will be there to help guide you through every step of your journey to sobriety. When I first started out I struggled a lot with my friends and family knowing what I was going through and not really being supportive. Once I started my sober living program it was an awesome feeling to know I had someone who believed in me even if they didn’t know anything about it themselves. You should never forget to take care of yourself and your own mental and physical health. It will help you keep the fight off of drugs or alcohol from affecting your daily life.
