Drug rehabilitation is essentially the treatment of drug dependence through drug therapy, support groups, or both. In fact, drug rehabilitation programs have been around since the 1950s. However, today, there are many more people who suffer from addiction to drugs than ever before. The number of drug rehab facilities has expanded in the last couple of decades, particularly in the United States, which is largely because of the increase in the use of illegal drugs. However, drug rehabilitation programs have become increasingly popular over the past few years in Canada, where the need for such treatment is particularly high.
Rehabilitation is not simply a matter of rehabilitating addicts back into society. The term “rehabilitation” actually refers to the change in an individual’s mental, emotional and physical state through an intentional change in the environment, such as a change in diet, exercise, and medication. This change is sometimes done by a trained therapist or group of therapists and can also involve participation in a community, or therapeutic drug intervention program. Drug rehabilitation programs can be for short-term rehabilitation, or long-term recovery, although the two are often combined. Most drug rehabilitation centers are supervised by a physician, although there are some that do not require this supervision. Some drug rehabilitation facilities do not even provide the patient with the medication needed to stay clean, so long-term treatment often depends on the ongoing support from family and friends.
Today’s drug rehabilitation centers offer a wide range of services to patients. Inpatient treatment programs usually offer a set schedule of medications that are used to help patients recover from their addiction. However, it is important that the patient follows the prescribed medication and does not stop taking them suddenly because they are not responding well to the treatment. Detoxification therapy is also used to help patients who cannot keep up with their medication schedule during detox. Detox programs also allow patients to receive care at their own pace and in their own environment. Inpatient programs can be customized to fit a particular patient’s needs, depending on their health and/or social situation. Most treatment facilities offer on-site and online services, as well as programs that can be tailored specifically for teens.
