Stepping Stones for the treatment of alcoholics or addicts is an addiction treatment facility which operates in the city of Huntsville Alabama. It is the largest residential treatment program in the state of Alabama and it operates on a non-profit basis. Stepping Stones has been in operation since the early 1990’s. Stepping Stones for Alcoholics is managed by the National Drug Treatment Association (NDTA) and is a national model that is recognized by state mental health agencies. Stepping Stones does not work on a short term or a long term basis.
Stepping Stone residential living is based around the Oxford method operating on the basis of voluntary association collectively run by patients. Stepping Stone is neither a rehabilitation facility or a residential halfway house. Instead it is a community in which addicts support each other and help them through their recovery. The focus of Stepping Stone is on helping addicts get better. It helps them build up their self esteem their motivation levels their relationships with family members friends and peers and their skills to make it through life. Stepping Stone offers programs that are designed to give the addict and his or her family and friends tools and resources that can be used in life. This includes but is not limited to career counseling parenting classes health nutrition and financial planning.
The Steering Stones program was created in New York City in 1972. In the beginning the aim of Steering Stones was to provide drug addicts with a safe place to live where they could have access to medical care and other services. Today the Steering Stones program provides outpatient treatment programs for drug and alcohol addicts day treatment centers inpatient treatment programs residential treatment programs and transitional homes in the United States. It is accredited by the American Association of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (AAAD). As of September 2020 Steering Stone was accredited by NAATD.
