Drug rehabilitation refers to the treatment of drug abuse from addiction. Drug addiction refers to the mental disease that develops when an individual uses a substance that is injurious to his health in an abnormal and uncontrolled manner. It also includes the voluntary use of substances as well as the involuntary use of substances as a result of psychological causes, stress or emotional disturbances. Addiction is defined as “repeated drug use with continuing distress associated with use”. This article will focus on the treatment of drug addiction from the standpoint of drug rehabilitation and it is assumed that the reader is already well aware of the concept of drug rehabilitation.
The basic treatment for drug rehabilitation consists of four main phases: detoxification, maintenance, education, and treatment. Detoxification is the process in which the patient undergoes withdrawal from drug or alcohol. Maintenance is also called the stabilization phase in which a person becomes sober from the drug, alcohol or any other substance. The last phase of treatment is known as the rehabilitation phase. The rehabilitation phase basically involves the patient’s adjustment in to various aspects of life including his family, friends, society, work and school. This phase aims to build the confidence of the individual and help him deal with different social situations without the need of drug or alcohol. It is also a time when the person’s mental capacity to control his addiction is improved.
There are many different types of drug rehabilitation. Generally, drug rehabilitation centers are centers where a person receives a drug or alcohol rehab or treatment. In these centers, patients are treated in groups, under the direction of trained doctors or psychologists. This type of center has a lot of advantages over other kinds of rehabilitation center. It can help the patients overcome their addictions in a shorter period of time since they are treated individually. However, the facilities available in these drug rehabilitation centers are not as advanced as those found in more complex drug rehabilitation centers. These rehab centers generally give only short-term treatment since they are less expensive and require less staff.
