“I hope my research findings will be utilized,” she said. “Ultimately, it is up to service providers to stay informed and to update their policies and practices to reflect research findings. However, the translation from research to practice is quite complex.”
Wiendels also stated that it’s vital to highlight that many rehab treatment services receive restricted funding.
“Hiring another staff member and having a separate space for individuals undergoing acute methamphetamine withdrawal would facilitate effective management of this withdrawal syndrome,” she said. “However, service providers need funding to implement such changes and resources to monitor their progress following said changes. As such, grant proposals are often needed. Therefore, there needs to be a lot of motivation, commitment, initiative, and collaboration between researchers and community agencies for policy and service changes to occur.”
