Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) is an entity created by Act 881 of 1965 to serve the people of Alabama with mental diseases, intellectual disabilities, substance abuse disorders and mental health problems. The state department has been officially recognized by the Alabama Department of Commerce and Industries (ADAI). The department was officially established by Act 881. Since its inception, the department of mental health has served thousands of Alabama citizens with different mental illness, substance abuse disorders and other mental health related problems. ADMH strives to improve the quality of life of individuals with special needs through research and education.

One of the major functions of the ADMH is to establish a system that can effectively treat people suffering from mental disorders or other mental conditions. The main functions of the department are to establish and sustain community-based treatment programs for the mentally ill, substance abusers and the mentally retarded. It also offers training for various mental health professionals and helps in the development of standards and rules that are necessary for treating mental illnesses. The state department also promotes education and awareness about mental illness. The state department also conducts research on mental health issues and provides assistance to patients, families and the general public. It also provides information and referral services to patients and their families who need mental health services.

The state department of mental health was founded by Dr. George R. Bronson. It is funded by the Federal Drug Administration and administered by the State Board of Public Health. ADMH is an important public health agency whose main goal is to promote the prevention and education of mental illness and related problems. The state department of mental health provides assistance to local community agencies as well as the state health departments in maintaining comprehensive systems of mental health care. In addition, the department of mental health also coordinates with other state, federal and private agencies to develop effective services for patients and their families.
