Mental illnesses can be divided into two major categories: major and minor mental disorders.
Major mental disorders include schizophrenia bipolar and psychotic disorders. These disorders are often life threatening and require immediate medical attention and care. They are known to have severe effects on both the physical and mental well being of an individual. Some of these disorders involve a severe emotional disturbance and sometimes even a severe physical disorder. Minor mental disorders include those which are often overlooked as insignificant and in reality are quite serious problems. These disorders usually occur in childhood or in the later stages of life. The first step towards the treatment of a minor mental disorder is to seek advice from a psychiatrist psychologist or other qualified professional. These professionals may refer you to a psychiatrist who will carry out a thorough examination of your mental health condition. The next step is to go through with an assessment of your personal situation identify the cause of your problem and then treat this. After the evaluation a treatment program will be put into place.
