The EAPS – East Alabama Psychiatric Services has been providing treatment and assistance to the mentally ill in the area of mental illness for over fifty years. This agency was formed in 1966 by Dr. William W. Cushing. Dr. Cushing was the Director of the Eastern Virginia Psychiatric Center in Richmond, Virginia, one of the premier psychiatric institutions in the world. Today the organization is run by Dr. David M. Bowers. The mission of this organization is to serve the community and patients through mental health and mental retardation care, through treatment of mental illness and substance abuse, through research, through education and through public outreach and awareness.
There are two main areas of mental illness that are covered by the organization. The first area is the mental disorders. This includes a large number of different types of mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, clinical depression, eating disorders, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and many other disorders. The second area of mental illness covered by the organization covers various types of behavioral disorders including juvenile delinquency, juvenile detention centers, family custody battles, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and domestic violence among many others. The staff at EAPS is made up of professionals who have earned the highest qualifications in the field of mental health. They work with a wide variety of people including families, law enforcement officers, school systems, prison authorities, and juvenile offenders.
EAPS – East Alabama Psychiatric Services works closely with its client’s families and their children in a very comprehensive manner. They provide assistance through the entire family structure. The entire family receives a full diagnosis and appropriate treatment as needed. Family members are informed of the medical issues and are kept up to date on their condition by the professionals. The family is encouraged to seek out outside help if necessary. The staff at EAPS is dedicated to ensuring the mental health and well being of the patient and his family. In addition to the regular visits with the patients, they also visit the families on a regular basis to make sure that the family is involved in the recovery process.
