The Shelby Psychological Services, Inc. (SPSI) is a private organization that provides treatment services to a wide variety of mental health conditions and disorders. SPSI has three main centers, all located in Michigan. They include a clinic, a mental health and drug abuse treatment facility, and a center for outpatient mental health. Their clinics provide comprehensive services for their clients, including psychiatric, substance abuse, family and community therapy, mental health counseling, and behavioral analysis. They also offer specialty therapies such as:
Michigan state laws require the private, nonprofit agencies to be licensed and certified by the state and be registered with them. They are required to adhere to standards that are set by the national council on independent living (NICL). They are subject to ongoing state and federal audits and inspections. There are two types of treatment centers in Michigan; one is an inpatient facility, and the other is a 24-hour facility. Both have a staff that is specially trained and experienced in the areas of mental health and addiction. Both the inpatient and the 24-hour facilities have a licensed psychiatrist and psychologists on staff. They are supervised by licensed registered nurses and are inspected by licensed clinical social workers on a regular basis.
Counselors at the mental health centers are licensed and trained to treat mental health conditions. They are members of The National Council for Behavioral Health. Inpatient treatment is provided in a group, individual, or family therapy setting. A group therapy session is the most effective type of therapy and is also the most expensive. Each patient is individually evaluated and given individualized attention according to the needs of each individual. Family counseling services are also available but not always necessary. Family therapy can help a family cope with the effects of a mental illness or addiction.
