Mental health is also known as the quality or absence of mental disorder. It’s the state of a person who’s “acting at an acceptable level of behavioral and emotional adjustment.” This can be described as the degree of mental health of a person who can take advantage of his capabilities, are able to work together with people, enjoy life, can carry on with one’s normal routines, and is capable of maintaining relationships. In general, mental health has four different parts: the physical health, the mental health, the social health, and the behavioral health. The first three are interrelated. The other two are independent and can only be determined together. A person can improve all four at the same time.
What is mental health? Is it all about keeping up with the latest technology and gadgets? Absolutely not. It involves making choices about your priorities, planning and organizing daily activities, taking care of yourself physically, improving relationships with others, and taking care of your mental health. These are the steps toward good health, as explained by the National Institute of Mental Health. People with low mental health are more likely to engage in risky behaviors and develop depression, substance abuse, anxiety disorders, and other serious mental health issues. The National Institute of Mental Health believes that it is not enough for people to know they have mental health problems; they must do something about it.
There are several ways in which mental health can be improved. Taking medications is one. There are counseling services, social programs, and therapy, and even psychotherapy. Mental health should not be viewed as a failure or a disease, but as a blessing to everyone.
