Mental health is an assessment of a person’s mental health based on a diagnosis that has been made by a medical professional. Mental health is usually the extent of mental health or an absence of clinical mental disorder. It is a state of a person who is “performing at an acceptable level of emotional, behavioral and social adjustment.” The state can range from having the capacity to cope with normal activities, coping with normal stressors, experiencing minor depression or anxiety disorders to a more severe disorder such as bipolar, schizophrenia, etc.
Mental Health professionals have several different types of diagnosis that are used to describe various mental illnesses. A person may be diagnosed with a mood disorder, which is a chronic mood swing ranging from mania or depression to anxiety. A person could also be diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, which is characterized by delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized behavior. Another common type of mental disorder is termed as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. While the causes of some of these disorders are still unknown, researchers have found that certain brain chemicals play a role in their development.
There are many forms of treatments available for treating mental illnesses. Some of the most common treatments include therapy, medication, therapy combined with medication, and group therapy. Some of the therapies that can be used to treat mental illnesses are cognitive behavioral therapy, neurocognitive therapy, and antidepressant medications. There are also various alternative methods to treat mental disorders such as yoga, acupuncture, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, etc. However, there are also some individuals who resort to a combination of traditional and alternative methods in order to address the symptoms of their mental illnesses.
