Children of Alabama Amelia Center has been a pioneer in offering therapeutic services to children with disabilities since 1875. Located on the second floor of the historic John L. Lewis House on New York Avenue in Baldwin, AL, the center offers its patients personalized care that gives them an opportunity to live independently in an environment that is conducive to their needs and desires. The center also provides care for the family members of children with developmental disabilities. As a result of the extensive research done by experts at Children’s of Alabama – Amelia Center, there are many types of therapies available for children with a range of disabilities. These include behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. The therapists use a variety of methods including psychotherapy, counseling, education and exercise to help children develop positive relationships and self-esteem.

Children with special needs have a range of medical conditions. Many of these conditions can be difficult for children with developmental disabilities to deal with. Some of these conditions include cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, stroke, Down syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and cerebral palsy. While all children have unique mental and emotional qualities, there are common characteristics among the children with these conditions that parents can work with and teach their children. The Children’s of Alabama – Amelia Center offers programs to help these children learn more about their physical and mental capacities. The center helps children with disabilities establish a sense of responsibility for their own lives and to make decisions regarding their future. This program helps children develop a sense of self worth, a sense of responsibility, and an awareness of the social skills and interpersonal skills they will need to lead a normal life.
