it is very important for recovering addicts to have social connections with people who have different experiences, and not just individuals who are going through recovery or are associated with recovery indirectly.

Researchers stated that this is the first study to show that recovery from addiction is directly associated with an increase in social group membership, and they highlighted that wellbeing in drug addiction recovery is “better when [recovering addicts] are engaged with a diverse range of social groups.”

Social immersion is beneficial and promotes wellbeing. But does this mean that social circles are the key to progress in addiction recovery and should get credit for an addict’s successful sobriety?

“Our findings suggest that the answer [is] both,” the researchers stated. “The significance of social identity [in addiction recovery is] a process involving a confluence of both intrapsychic and social factors.”
