Another study published this month focused on teen misuse of prescription opioids that can cause a gateway effect to later-life heroin addiction.

The researchers confirmed that youngsters who participated in the nonmedical use of opioids were much more likely to venture into heroin use and develop life-threatening addictions. The issue was spotlighted because of concerns that people who misused prescription opioids were crossing over to heroin due to its easier affordability and access.

The study also noted that an alarming number of the teens did not even know that they were misusing opioids.
