What is mental health? Mental health is an overall state of emotional well-being or a lack of mental disease. It’s the quality of an individual’s mental and emotional functioning at an acceptable level of emotional and behavior adjustment. It’s also called mental health because it involves the mental social physiological and behavioral aspects of an individual’s life. It has become a part of our society and our lives are more intertwined with it. The definition of mental health is quite varied but it has a lot to do with the well being and mental health of an individual. For example someone who has high levels of mental health may be able to enjoy his/her life without a constant state of worry or anxiety.
There are several factors that affect the quality of our mental health. It may be due to genetic factors environmental factors and other external factors. These factors range from psychological and environmental factors such as stress trauma poor education and poor social environment to physical factors like poor nutrition lack of exercise and poor diet. The physical health of an individual is also affected by the mental health. For instance a person who suffers from a major illness may not be mentally healthy. This is because there is a severe disruption in his/her mental health and his/her physical health. Such a person may experience mental stress and physical strain but will never be able to overcome this mental and physical strain through his/her mental strength alone.
Thus the quality of a person’s mental health determines the quality of his/her physical and emotional health. Some factors that contribute to the quality of an individual’s mental health include good nutrition exercise and psychological stress reduction.
