Mental Health is the state of psychological well being or absence of mental disorder. It is the condition of a person who is “working at a satisfying level of emotional and behavioral adaptation”. It has many facets and its definition may vary from one condition to another. Generally mental health refers to the ability to cope with situations that we cannot control such as stressful situations and traumatic events and to cope with the various aspects of life such as family work and social relationships. However it does not necessarily mean the same as being in “good shape” or being in a “healthy state”. Some people may be in mental health but may have mental illnesses such as depression anxiety and bipolar disorder. In order to understand the importance of the state of mental health one needs to look at the various aspects of our lives and how they affect us.
The importance of mental health cannot be underestimated. If you are not in a good state you are prone to suffer mental illnesses and diseases. For example if you are suffering from depression you may start to lose interest in daily activities such as doing homework taking care of yourself going out for a walk listening to music going for a date with someone special etc. If your mental health is not in good shape your social relationships may also suffer as you tend to withdraw from them because of the stress and emotional imbalance within you. When you suffer from a mental disorder you will also have problems with thinking logically and rationally. Thus the most important thing is that you should seek medical assistance if you feel that you are suffering from any of the mental conditions or if your mental health is deteriorating.
To be in a good state is essential for your well being. However if you are having some sort of mental disorder you may feel that your mental health is deteriorating because your condition is worsening. When your mental health deteriorates your personality is also affected. This type of personality change can be detrimental to your social life career and even relationships. However if you are not aware of your state of mind it is hard to do something about it. Thus it is necessary to consult with a mental health professional and seek treatment. Mental health can be maintained or improved by maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise.
