nationally there was an increase in the number of adolescents and children who made hospital visits because of conditions related to opioids, such as poisonings or overdoses, between 2004 and 2015.
Within that time frame, a particular rise was seen in the number of children who needed to go to an intensive care unit after accidentally getting a hold of opioids.
Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that over 100 minors who abuse opioids arrive in emergency departments across the country each day.
